NY Post - Talk about your Bronx bummers! Chien-Ming Wang was dreadful again in his third start of the season and the Indians pasted the Yankees with a record-shattering, 14-run second inning — the worst inning the storied organization ever has endured — and obliterated the Bombers, 22-4. The 22 runs tied for the most allowed by the Yanks at home in their 107 major league seasons. Wang was drilled for eight runs in just 1 1/3 innings, his third straight abysmal start to open the season. He is 0-3 with a shocking 34.50 ERA, and incredibly, has lasted a total of six innings in 2009, allowing 23 runs to the Orioles, Rays and Indians. Manager Joe Girardi said Wang’s next start, scheduled for Friday in Boston, is in jeopardy… Left fielder Johnny Damon said Wang’s mound woes are making things tough on the Yankees’ bullpen. “We have six losses on the year right now and he’s got three of them,” Damon said. “And in all three of those games, we’ve been blown out and we’ve had to go to our bullpen. So maybe our bullpen’s not sharp the following days. So I don’t know what more to say, but hopefully he can figure it out because it’d be tough to keep on going like this.”
Way to go, Johnny. That’s what a leader does. He inspires. I’m sure Wang just needed you shoving him under the Fung Wa to get his head on straight. Calling him out in public is the perfect thing to bolster a guy’s confindence and put him right back on track. It’s also the perfect way to show that those of us back in Boston were wrong when we said you’re all about yourself and you’re in love with your reflection the sound of your own voice. Honestly, I didn’t think anything could be funnier than the sight of the Indians’ players stifling laughter in the dugout or the hundreds of empty $2500-a-pop seats in the new stadium, but Damon never fails to disappoint.
