Albany @ Syracuse Postgame

We needed that - is the first thing that came to my mind when the game ended last night. I dont know why for sure (though I blame football) but the SU fan base seems made of glass lately. The loss to Lemoyne, absolutely broke us as a fan base, and during the game against Albany - one that should have been a celebration of one of the most successful college basketball programs of all time - there were only 15K in attendance (actually less butts in seats) and the atmosphere was as bad as I've ever seen in the Carrier Dome.

What a terrible showing to celebrate the career of the only guy who won 800 basketball games at the same school which, oh yea, also happens to be his alma matter. I think you can make a very good argument that no one person has done more for any school than Jim Boeheim has done for Syracuse. He does not get enough respect around here, plain and simple. He alone is the difference between us being the 5th winningest program in basketball history and us being what Colgate or St. Bonaventure is. People forget that when he took over those were our closest peers in the college basketball world.

Hopefully this win against Albany will erase a lot of that bad mojo. Though they are a legitimately bad team, this was a legitimately dominating defensive performance. And defense is going to be what this team hangs its hat on all year long. In short it was exactly what we needed to see in every aspect. Sure there were too many turnovers, but they were not the legitimate kind of turnovers, they were the fastbreak/ally oop - we are dominating so much that we can do things we dont normally get to do turnovers. In a competitive game I'm confident that turnovers will not be a problem for us.

Not much more to say about the game (which in truth was not much of a game) than that. Would you rather be SU who lost an exhibition game that does not matter then win a in a blow out or would you rather be UNC who struggled against a team coached by Isaiah Thomas of all people, or Cal who only beat Murry St. by 5? My point is this, everything is back to even, lets act like it.

Here are some player rankings,

Triche: He's going to be good, right now he's a little too tentative. Just about every time he got into the lane something good happened, but he could have got into the lane a lot more than he did. One thing that worried me was 3 questionable charge calls against him. Is this a case of Triche not getting calls (they way it was for Harris) because he's so much bigger and stronger than the opposition, or were they fluke calls? I'll be interested to see what happens. Take away the charges and he had a nice game and showed a lot of potential. Its like he was bread to play the zone. Compare him defensively to any of our other freshmen in the zone - actually any freshman we've ever had and there is no comparison. I'll give him a 6, only because I think he could have scored double the points he did if he had wanted to.

Jardine: Looked great offensively. He made some very tough shots fairly routinely today. He can run an offense, I have no doubt about that. The question is, can he score. Today he did, I hope he keeps it up. Ranking: 8

Rautins: Was an absolute dynamo on defense in the first half. Completely dominated the game. He didnt hit any shots which is absolutely par for the course for him against cupcakes. I've never seen a guy before that shoots 20% against cupcakes and 40% against Big East competition but this will be the third year in a row that Rautins looks to do it. I have no doubt that he'll be money against Cal so long as he's healthy. By the way Robert Morris is not a bad team, they are much tougher than Albany and will probably be playing in the NCAAs this year. If Rautins can't play against them I'm officially nervous. He's the one guy we simply can't afford to lose. Ranking: For the love of god just get through these game without injury Andy!

Johnson: Stat line: 12pts, 8rebs, 4ass, 6stls. Great stat stuffer. These are the kinds of lines we should expect to see from Johnson this year. Unfortunately we should also expect to see the 5-11 from the floor type nights where all his points are garbage points. This guy will do all the little things for us. He's a glue guy, and a good player. He's a hard worker and the kind of athletic player this team needs. Ranking: 6

Jackson: He had a very quiet game, only playing 19 minutes, but in those 19 minutes he scored 10 points (on 4-4 from the field) had 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Extrapolate that over, say, 30 minutes and Jackson has himself a hell of a game. Very efficient from Jackson tonight which is what we need from him. As the competition improves he'll play more minutes and Onuaku will play less (at least until AO gets fully back into game shape). But until the games get close, Boeheim is going to try to give AO as much run as he can, I'm sure. Ranking: 8

Onuaku: Looked way better than he did against LeMoyne, but make no mistake, Albany does not have a player as good as LeMoyne's center who was the reigning D2 player of the year. Still AO was 6-7 from the field and looked solid on D. Even hit a couple of free throws. Ranking: 7

Joseph: He's going to see a lot of time for us this year, and I wouldn't be surprised if, come March he is a bigger scorer for us than Johnson. He is a fantastic defender, and has made one of the biggest leaps on the defensive side of the ball from year to year that I have ever seen. The offense I think is going to come. He's an athletic 6'8 who can handle the ball, pass, and hit shots. I just dont see any reason why it should not all come together for him on offense the way it has on D. It will take a little longer of course, on the offensive side, but, this game was a great first step. Ranking: 9

Mookie/Southerland: Ok, I know those guys were a combined 0-10 from the floor, and I know they looked like black holes on O, but bear in mind that they did exactly what Boehim wanted them to (except actually make the shots, of course). When young guys are still trying to "get it" Boehiem often only asks them to do what they do best. In both these guys case that is shoot the ball. Boeheim started out a lot of very good players (Devendorf and Greene come to mind) the same way. Southerland actually had a couple of steals and a block on D, I dont know how much he'll play this year, but I see a future for him. Not sure I can say the same about Mookie, but I'm ok with him coming in an chucking in a blow out win.

Riley: He had a beautiful turnaround, but more impressively looked very comfortable on D. I was really impressed. We might have a good one on our hands, and going up against Jackson and AO every day in practice sure wont hurt his progression as a basketball player. Unfortunately the Inn is full this year, but I cant wait to see more of Riley in the future. Ranking: 9

Reese: I just want to point out that the guy only played 4 minutes, and is 5 foot 11 . . . and had 4 rebounds! He is lightning quick and is going to help our slower guards deal with pressure D, by getting in their hip pocket every day in practice. Ranking: 8

Monfredo told the Worcester Telegram & Gazette he was in love with his former student, but did not know whether school administrators were aware of the tryst. Rafferty accuses school officials of allowing Ivanowski to remain in a relationship she should have been protected from.“You can say she was an exotic dancer and she was 18, but it was not an equal relationship,” Rafferty said. School officials should have removed Monfredo from the classroom, Rafferty said. Ivanowski suffered from such severe anxiety that she was unable to take exams, and the school banned her from participating in last weekend’s graduation ceremony, her lawyer said.

The Yankees vs. Red Sox is the best rivalry in baseball. But it’s June 9th. This series has absolutely no bearing on anything besides temporary bragging rights. Sure you could argue that New York needs to win this series just to prove to themselves that they are capable of beating us, but I don’t even think that matters. A win or a loss is no more important than vs. any other team at this point. I know it’s the mentality of Red Sox Nation to get all worked up into a frenzy whenever New York comes to tow, but it’s so overblown it’s not even funny. Bottom-line is that no matter what happens over the next three games I’m still more worried about Tampa than New York.

N.J. Student Suspended Over ‘Hot Girl’ Tournament
